Eco Tech Daily: The Story so Far
I’ve been writing and publishing content for Eco Tech Daily for more than three years. And it recently occurred to me that I’ve never taken a look back at what the site has achieved over that period.
So, read on to discover a brief history of Eco Tech Daily, and some of the highlights of the last three years…
It started with an intense personal interest in all things related to green technology and sustainability. This led me to create the Eco Tech Daily website in March 2014. The driving idea behind this was to have a platform where I could share the latest green technology innovations and developments – and give my own perspective on them.
To be honest, I started the site without any definite plan or goal in mind. I guess I wanted to see how much interest the site would gather, and how much time and effort I would be able to find to keep writing new content for the site!
When I look back now at the first article (Tablet or Laptop. Which is Greenest?) published in April 2014, I can see a child-like enthusiasm in the content – in other words, it’s a bit on the basic side! However, it was the perfect article to kickstart the site, and it also allowed me to get to grips with researching and writing about green technology.
To date, I’ve now written and published 43 Eco Tech Daily articles.
I won’t list them all, but I’m sure you’ll be interested to see which articles have been the most popular, so here’s the current top ten:
1. 10 Little-Known Facts About Hyperloop (1,847 views)
2. 10 Green Websites You Should Know and Use (575 views)
3. Meet the World’s Smallest and Lightest Hydropower Station (548 views)
4. Tony Seba’s Presentation on the Future of Energy and Transportation Will Blow You Away (468 views)
5. Bam•Brush is an Eco-Friendly Toothbrush Made From Freshly Harvested Bamboo (460 views)
6. This Foldable E-Scooter Powers Through Its Kickstarter Funding Target (404 views)
7. This Custom-Made Bike Features a Sustainable Bamboo Frame (348 views)
8. The UK’s First Eco-Town Begins to Take Shape (317 views)
9. Robotics Startup Launches Self-Driving Shuttles at Santa Clara University (304 views)
10. Solar Secrets of South-Facing Houses (281 views)
Now, these stats may not sound like a lot, but bear in mind that I’ve never paid a penny to advertise the site. All views have come from people who’ve either seen our social media posts – or who have searched on the web for information about green technology.
The No. 1 article, which takes a look at Hyperloop, has continued to gain substantial views despite it originally being published back in September 2016. The reason is obvious of course. Elon Musk and his Hyperloop idea have become front-page news in the last few months.
Looking at the top ten list above, I can also see something else that is fascinating. Namely, that two of the articles are about bamboo products! Yes, there’s the bamboo toothbrush and the bamboo bike. Clearly, people (including me) are drawn to natural and sustainable products. Especially when they look as good as those two do!
Social media has been my way of marketing the content on Eco Tech Daily, and from zero followers and viewers in April 2014, our social media stats now look like this:
Facebook: 81 followers
Flipboard: 4,999 viewers (thanks to my brother Mark – who regularly posts news stories into our magazine)
Twitter: 11,473 followers
One thing is obvious from the above – our Facebook account is not doing well! Still, it’s not really surprising, as Facebook is definitely not the go-to place for green technology news.
Much more satisfying is the interest received in our Flipboard and Twitter accounts. These probably account for 80% of all visitors arriving at Eco Tech Daily. It’s a lot of work keeping these social media accounts up-to-date with posts, but as the above shows – it’s well worth it.
So, what does the future hold for Eco Tech Daily?
Well, for starters, I’ll be continuing to write and publish new content on the site. But in addition, from 2018 onwards, I’ll be following a professional content plan. This will mean scheduled articles, scheduled social media posts and hopefully some guest writers providing content too. (Let me know if you’re interested in contributing to the site in this way.) It will also mean that instead of just choosing random news to cover, I’ll be focusing on specific topics – and then delving into them in more depth.
Finally, let me say a big thank you to everyone who has visited the site, liked/shared our social media posts or has commented directly on some of our articles.
It’s this interest from people across the world that has kept me motivated, and enabled the site to go from strength-to-strength. Thanks again!
