Inspiration for a Brighter Future

This Custom-Made Bike Features a Sustainable Bamboo Frame

Craft Bicycle 1

Cycling has always been a green way of exercising and commuting. However, now you can go even greener, by riding a bike made with an eco-friendly bamboo frame.

The bike is designed and engineered by the Romania-based Craft Bicycle Company, whose mission statement is:

“Change every aspect of riding a bike using only high-quality products and sustainable materials.”

What Makes This Bike Unique?

Craft Bicycle 2

Firstly, each bike is hand-crafted to your specific requirements, which includes a perfect-sized frame for your height.

The sustainable bamboo frame sits at the heart of this high-quality bike. It’s easy to believe the manufacturer’s claim that 80 hours of work goes into each bike.

Another unique aspect of this bike is its appearance. I would describe it as… part retro, part sophistication.

Is Bamboo a Suitable Material for Bike Frames?

Craft Bicycle 3

Yes, absolutely it is.

Bamboo is lightweight like carbon fiber, but durable and strong like steel. It also tends to grow straight – making it ideal for a bike frame.

You may not know this, but bamboo is a natural shock-absorber. When used in a bike it offers you a super-smooth ride.

In terms of its sustainability, the bamboo plant scores very highly. It requires no replanting after harvesting, and can grow up to an incredible 4 feet per day!

Finally, in case you were wondering, the bamboo used in the bike is treated to be water, weather and insect-proof.

How Can I Get My Hands on One of These Bikes?

The Craft Bicycle Company is offering accessories and complete bikes via their page on crowdfunding website Indiegogo.

To give you an idea of prices, bamboo handlebars are listed at €60 + shipping, and a complete handcrafted bike starts from €980 + shipping.
